In a Honeymooners episode from 1956 entitled “Young Man with a Horn,” Alice Kramden is cleaning out some things that she and Ralph don’t use anymore. One of them is an old cornet. Ralph sees it and is incensed that Alice wants to get rid of it, asserting that there are “tender memories” connected to the horn. He wonders aloud if he can still play it, then proceeds to play a bit of “Carnival of Venice.” Ralph, ever the dreamer and philosopher, regrets not continuing with his music studies, thus introducing the central crisis of the episode.
Do you have an old band instrument in a closet somewhere that you haven’t played in a while? Do you think you could still play it? Why not dig it out, clean it up, and come to the Bloomfield Middle School some Monday night? Sit in on a rehearsal and see what you can do. You might be surprised!
Rehearsals resume on Monday, January 14. We rehearse from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. We welcome musicians of all skill levels, including student musicians. If you want additional information, visit our Contact page and reach out to our Music Director, Frank Ortega.
Meanwhile, here is a video recordings of the band, including special guest vocalist Holly Flack, from our Holiday Spectacular concert in December 2018. Thank you to John Meixner for providing this recording and the accompanying photo!
